In this collaborative pilot study, eight arts and cultural organisations in Liverpool (acting together as the Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium, or LARC) surveyed audiences and visitors about the impacts of their experiences over the 2009-10 season.

This report discusses the range of findings with respect to audiences’ ‘readiness to receive’ the art and the six constructs of intrinsic impact: captivation, emotional resonance, spiritual value, intellectual stimulation, aesthetic growth and social bonding. The results of the study have stimulated conversations about artistic programmes, audience engagement, customer service and other topics, and also helped to advance a longer arc of learning about impact assessment underway in the U.K., U.S. and Australia.

Together with the wide range of smaller cultural organisations and other major venues in Liverpool, LARC represents a cultural infrastructure that is among the best of any of the major English regional cities.

For this project, Baker Richards Consulting worked in partnership with WolfBrown, combining significant experience across research, data analysis and marketing in the cultural sector.

WolfBrown has pioneered the development of this type of research in the cultural sector in the US and this would be a groundbreaking study for the arts in the UK. WolfBrown helps foundations, government agencies and non-profit organizations understand their potential and fulfill the promise of their missions.

The Long Night took place in Liverpool on 18th November with businesses across the city staying open late and laying on fun events for everyone that turned up. The atmosphere in the city was brilliant and LARC were thrilled to see the enthusiasm everyone put into the night but we were surprised by some of the places people chose to wear or use the Long Night glow in the dark wrist bands – photos below. Plus the video from the a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic’s Ensemble 10/10 as they perform a relay of sound across city centre Venues.

a.P.A.t.T. & Orchestra 10 10 – Presents Sound Relay

This was a magnetic relay of sound as musicians including Ensemble 10/10 and the a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra took people on a cumulative journey of musical happenings from Hope Street to the Albert Dock. Inspired by the Tate Liverpool Touched exhibition as part of the Liverpool Biennial, and taking composer Jennifer Watson’s Reflections as its focus, dozens of musicians tested the limits of their own practice to create a series of surprising, experimental and reflexive happenings. Following the Long Night trail, the procession gathers pace, picking up new musical material along the way and culminating with a finale in the Tate Gallery, including in and around the installation of Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Embryology (1978–1980).

There’s a busy night ahead in Liverpool this November with the return of the hugely popular Long Night, when the city centre galleries and museums, throw open their doors late.

This after hours celebration of art, culture and entertainment promises to be extra busy this year as the date also marks the official start of the city’s Christmas celebrations, the first night of the Da Da Festival and the second night of the Cornerstone Festival.

This year’s Long Night will begin early and finish late, as many of the venues taking part will be open until well after midnight. Some of the events and exhibitions have a participatory element, offering the chance to join in and make the Long Night experience even more exciting and many are family friendly.

Last May’s Light Night attracted over 12,500 visits and organisers predict that the Long Night will attract even more visitors to the city.

You can download the programme from the Open Culture website

Larc are proud to be able to support this programme of activity.
