Creative Apprenticeships

LARC has been running a national pilot for the Government’s Creative Apprenticeships scheme, hosting the first 10 Creative Apprentices in the country, working closely with Creative Cultural Skills, Liverpool Community College and the LSC.
The scheme aims to diversify the range of people who enter employment in the cultural sector by offering opportunities to young people who have not had access to degree level education. The ten young people were placed as apprentices with the LARC members, joined by Merseyside Dance Initiative.
The first group of apprentices have now completed their year with LARC organisations. The apprentices worked towards a Level 2 NVQ in Community Arts Management. Eight have achieved the qualification, with four performing so well they earned Level 3s instead of the expected Level 2s.
The next phase of the programme will start in January 2010, involving a wider range of employers and offering more choice of pathways for the apprentices. This will enable the scheme to have a wider reach across the cultural sector in the region and enable more young people to take up the scheme.
Liverpool Community College will be leading on the next phase, working closely with LARC, and with support from North West Vision for a programme manager. LARC’s Thrive programme will support training and capacity building for employers involved the scheme.
The scheme is now looking for employers working within and alongside the Creative and Cultural sector to be a part of this successful initiative in the coming year.
